Education Sponsorships
for Children, Teachers, and Nursing Students

Family Health Ministries supports a school for 550 students grades pre-K through grade 13 in the southern mountain community of Fondwa. Funds to support the school are raised through the children's education and teacher sponsorship programs.

Earthquake Update: FHM continued to pay teachers after the January 12, 2010 earthquake until school restarted in late spring. School will continue throughout the summer months to make up for "lost time," so sponsorship funds are needed more than ever.

Students are attending class in temporary buildings and in tents. Plans are progressing for the new school. When the design is done and estimates are established, FHM will publicize the needs and help with the fundraising.

Children's Sponsorships
The children's sponsorship program provides five meals a week, a contribution to teacher salaries, regular anti-parasitic medicine, daily vitamins, and an annual nutritional assessment.

Sponsors receive a picture of the child they sponsor and regular updates on the student's progress from FHM's sponsorship coordinator, Jamalyn Peigh Williamson pictured at the bottom of the page.

Teacher Sponsorships
Teacher sponsorships cover teacher salaries.
Family Health Ministries provides two/thirds of the annual salaries in collaboration with Partners in Progress, who provide the other third.

FHM and PIP provide school jobs for about 60 people in Fondwa, including those who cook daily meals for the children.

Nursing Scholarships
FHM's nursing scholarship program has two purposes.

  • It is designed to provide post-high school opportunities for students graduating from the Ste. Antoine School in Fondwa.
  • The scholarship program will also help provide skilled nursing staff for the Leogane Family Health and Research Center. FHM is building the Leogane Family Health and Research Center about 45 minutes away from Fondwa - down the mountain on the southern coastal plain, and an hour and a half from FHM's other partner community in Blanchard, on the airport side of Port-au-Prince.

Jamalyn Peigh Williamson, Fondwa Sponsorship Coordinator

FHM’s long-time sponsorship coordinator, Jamalyn Peigh Williamson, moved from volunteer to FHM staff member in July 2008.

Jamalyn is a perfect fit for her role as Fondwa Project Manager as she and her husband Dave lived for 2 years in Fondwa after they both graduated from Duke Divinity School.  In Fondwa, in collaboration with FHM Partners Sister Carmelle and Sister Simone, they worked with the children at the local school and got to know their families, and also spent lots of time with the youngsters at the orphanage.

A key part of FHM’s strategic plan in the Fondwa community is to have sponsors for all 550 children at the school. Below - Jamalyn with her husband Dave and their own daughter in Fall 2007 along with sponsored children in Fondwa.
