The right forces have come together to fill the need for qualified nurses in Haiti:
- a new baccalaureate nursing program led by Haitian American Hilda Alcindor
- plans for a new research hospital and clinic for women and children, the Leogane Family Health & Research Center
- the graduation of children from the Fondwa Orphanage who want to pursue careers in nursing, and
- the emergence of donors in the US who has the passion to help Haitians who otherwise would not have the opportunity to pursue degrees in nursing.
The scholarship program
Family Health Ministries formed the Nursing Scholarship Program in response to the emerging needs of its Fondwa school program where students, particularly orphans, required financial assistance to pursue post-high school education.
Students will attend the Haiti Nursing School, Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de l’Université Episcopale d'Haïti (below) for three years.

Costs are $3000/year. Sponsors may make a one-time gift, or sponsor or co-sponsor a student with payments monthly or annually, or as the sponsor wishes.
Although scholarship priority will be given to Fondwa students, scholarships are available to students from all over Haiti. The Haiti Nursing School's director, Hilda Alcindor, will make the decisions on recipients in collaboration with FHM's executive director, Kathy Walmer.
Some groups enjoy sponsorsing a student as a group service activity. Download the nursing scholarship.PDF (551 kb) for distribution to your colleagues.
You can also contribute by going on a medical team to Haiti, or by collecting free medical supplies. Contact FHM to arrange the details - 919-382-5500 or info@familyhm.org info@familyhm.org
